The stunning Sheena Fierro and Luna (2.5)
Sheena had a healthy pregnancy with Luna and knew she wanted to deliver at home. She didn't know she was in labor when things started because she was only having subtle back pain that never got worse than a 4 her entire labor and delivery. Her instincts told her to hunker down in the dark by herself and to labor on her own so that's just what she did. Sheena wasn't able to fill up her birthing pool and her baby was crowing before her midwife was able to arrive. Luna arrived earth side after just a few hours of labor without any complication other than the discovery that Sheena had a curiously shaped placenta with an extra lobe.
Breastfeeding was Sheena's favorite thing from the very beginning. Luna latched right away and though she need to see a lactation consultant due to some issues including a forceful let down, she continued nursing until Luna chose to wean shortly after her second birthday. Sheena described her breastfeeding relationship as a drug, "the feeling of laying down with your baby after a long, hard day and having that warmth overcome you takes away everything", she says.
Sheena and her husband didn't know a lot about babies before they became parents and those first few weeks she often felt as if she was in over her head. It was in online communities like Instagram that she found her village and her saving graces. She realized she wasn't the only mom up at 3am with a baby who wouldn't sleep, she found connectivity and reaffirmed that she was not alone. She hopes that sharing her story and herself she's able to continue connecting with new mothers who are where she once was.
