The lovely Laura Amaral with daughter Hillary (22 months) and son Sean (3 months). Laura and her husband tried for about a year on their own to get pregnant before attempting fertility treatments. They tried fertility treatments for about a year and Laura actually got pregnant naturally on a break from treatments when the clinic wasn't happy with where her hormone levels were. Her pregnancy with Hillary was typical and she needed help along with her delivery and requested an epidural but she was pushing while they were putting it in. Hillary was born without complication. When Hillary was 9 months old they started trying again thinking it would take awhile to get pregnant. It happened right away but Laura had some spotting and bleeding and was told by her doctor that she needed to stop breastfeeding as it was putting her pregnancy at risk making her feel like she had to choose between her children. She was even told at one point that her pregnancy was not viable and went in for a D&C only to discover that her baby was just fine. She chose to continue breastfeeding through her pregnancy and Hillary self weaned at 15 months. Sean's birth was totally natural and just what Laura had hoped for. Sean was born with a congenital heart defect known as transposition of the great arteries that was not detected before birth. It is a condition incompatible with life if uncorrected. He had to be transferred to the nearest children's hospital and had open heart surgery at 5 days old. Thankfully, while Sean will have to follow up with a cardiologist his entire life they don't expect him to have any other complications.
