The magnificent Melissa Wirthlin with her son Boyd (almost 3).
Melissa says she's always had body issues but never felt more beautiful than when she was pregnant. While she was relatively healthy throughout she noticed that several times during her pregnancy her OB had mentioned scheduling her cesarean. She knew that wasn't what she wanted but thought she could choose otherwise. In her third trimester, she had a scheduled appointment and before she even saw her doctor the nurse told her they had scheduled her cesarean. She was upset but the doctor insisted that her son was going to be over 10 lbs and scared her husband a bit so he encouraged her to trust in the doctors recommendation. Melissa didn't enjoy feeling as if she didn't have a choice and she felt shamed by people who judged her for scheduling a cesarean. Her son was born without complication at just over 8lbs but her recovery was difficult. Melissa had dealt with kidney stones before and during her pregnancy and had been in the hospital just days before her delivery dealing with them. She was given a lot of pain medicine and feels that helped her to feel a bit invincible after her birth. Melissa felt great and asked to be discharged the day after her son was born and her doctor allowed her to be. Once home she was in tremendous pain and immediately regretted the decision. Thankfully breastfeeding has gone very well for them. Boyd had some food aversions and wasn't regularly eating solids until about 19 months so she was grateful he was still getting the benefits of breastmilk.
