The magnificent Kathryn Mielke with her sons Jack (3), Ravi and Harrison (2 - identical twins). Kathryn says that she is the only one who can show her children a confident and happy mother and so she wanted to participate to show the world that she is a confident and happy mother. She had been in survival mode for so long that she didn't realize she was simply existing from dealing with depression and anxiety that was exacerbated by her pregnancy and postpartum periods. When her twins were about 6 months old she finally found a great therapist that she was able to work with closely for about 8 months. She now feels that she has some great tools to help her navigate when things get tough and says the past year has been one of her best. Kathryn says she now goes to bed grateful every night and wakes up happy and grateful every morning.
Kathryn and her husband were trying when they conceived Jack but they weren't yet married and her family chose not to support her through her pregnancy. Once he arrived, however, she says that he was welcomed quite warmly. Her pregnancy went well though she didn't feel that her OB listened to her or respected her wishes throughout her labor and delivery. She was navigating breastfeeding and trying to get back to work when Jack was 8-9 months old and learned she was pregnant again. She chose to see a midwife this time based on her previous experience. Her midwife thought that perhaps her dates were off so she ordered an early ultrasound and Kathryn learned she was carrying twins. Though she became high risk her pregnancy progressed without complication and she delivered via cesarean which was the best choice for her family. Kathryn hopes that by sharing her experience she can help other women who acknowledge that they don't need to live without happiness and that help is there if you need it.
