The lovely Jennifer Novotny with her daughters, Carys (5), Elise (4) and Sela (17 months). Jennifer had 2 miscarriages before she became pregnant with Carys. They were devastating as she wasn't sure why it was happening and her doctor said it was just bad luck. She had a healthy pregnancy and delivery with Carys and thought that she wouldn't have any other issues moving forward. She went on to have a third miscarriage before conceiving Elise, her doctor was very unconcerned and unwilling to help her keep the baby so she switched providers. Her new doctor discovered that her progesterone levels were actual decreasing rather than increasing and was able to supplement artificially. Just when they announced and thought they were out of the woods Jennifer started spotting and was discovered to have a subchorionic hemorrhage. She was concerned she would loose the baby but around 26 weeks the hemorrhage healed on it's own. However, she found her delivery with Elise very traumatic. She was 6cm dilated without being in active labor. She was given lots of pitocin and didn't feel her medical team was communicating with her. She didn't think she'd have any more children but eventually decided to try for a third. She thought that taking the progesterone proactively would alleviate the chance of a miscarriage but she went on to miscarry for a fourth time. This loss helped her realize how much she really wanted a third. She was able to conceive Sela and switched to midwifery care. She says it was a redeeming experience to work with a respectful caregiver in a peaceful environment where everyone was communicating with her.
