The stunning Kaitlin Lemke with Harlan (3) and Gwen (9 mo). Kaitlin had a very healthy pregnancy with Harlan until he was born at 33 weeks. She hadn't really thought about how she wanted to deliver but she started bleeding while on vacation and went into the emergency room. They told her that they were going to give her a cesarean. She asked them to monitor her and see what happened and they refused. She asked if she could go somewhere else and she was told that she could if she wanted a dead baby and agreed to sign out against medical advice, so she consented to the cesarean. Harlan was not ready to be born and was having a very difficult time breathing. Kaitlin fought to have him transferred to a better NICU but they refused to transfer her with him. She pumped for him through his NICU stay and breastfed until he self weaned at 18 months, but is still pained by how he came into the world. Kaitlin was determined to have a very different experience the second time around. She changed doctors and kept Gwen in until 42 weeks. Kaitlin reluctantly agreed to come in for an induction. They gave her 12 hours of Pitocin and labor still hadn't started so they gave her the option to come back the next day for 12 more hours of Pitocin or to have a repeat cesarean. With a lot of tears, Kaitlin consented to the cesarean birth. While Gwen was born healthy, Kaitlin is still learning to accept her experience and hopes to possibly have another chance to have the birth she desires. We talked a lot about the trauma involved in a birth going so differently than you'd like and the immense pain that comes with not being the first one to see or hold your baby.
