The fabulous Melissa Faith Talev, Roland (4), and Miles (1).
Melissa is a pervious project participant. She joined us in Charlotte last year! You can view her initial image and photo here.
Melissa was 36 weeks pregnant with Miles during her last shoot. He arrived 11 days after his due date, which was the day after Roland's 3rd birthday. She was assisted by the same midwife team, in the same room of her house, all while her older son slept upstairs. Labor was shorter though in many ways harder, in part due to Miles size at over 10lbs. Tandem breastfeeding has its own challenges but she is incredibly proud of the bond with and between her boys and she's glad they've persevered.
Melissa's boys turned 1 and 4 the last week of March and are now respectively the ages she was when her mother was diagnosed with and died of colon cancer. "I feel I'm entering into an entirely new realm of motherhood and identity, especially as I begin to leave being a mom of babies behind. I was raised by and around mostly women and girls, so being a mom of boys (and eventually men) is something I never imagined as a child."
As she struggles with feeling capable and strong in this new phase of motherhood, Melissa recounts a moment just days ago. She took her boys to a kids concert and when they asked for volunteers to come on stage and tell the name of someone in their life who they think is strong, her normally shy son Roland's hand shot in the air. He stood in front of a room of strangers and said into the mic "my mom is super strong!" She says she will carry that moment with her as she navigates her changing role as a woman and mama.
