The tremendous Tangela Hills with her son Caleb (2 months). Tangela is also mom to daughter TiAnna (17) and Aasha (13) who wanted to be in attendance today but are dedicated to having perfect attendance in school.
Tangela has had healthy pregnancies and delivered all of her babies via cesarean. When she was 4 months pregnant with her first child she saw her niece being born vaginally and found herself quite alarmed. She told her doctor she wanted to avoid a vaginal delivery and asked what her options were. She told her she could deliver via cesarean but needed a medical reason to do so. Failure to dilate was one of the reasons that Tangela's doctor gave her and she says from that day forward she knew she didn't want her body to dilate, she was too scared.
Tangela went into labor on her own but sure enough, after 20 hours, she was not dilated and delivered via cesarean. Her recovery was painful and difficult and she questioned whether she had made the right choice but got through it. She chose to have a repeat cesarean for Aasha's birth but knew what to expect this time and things went much more smoothly.
With her daughters in high school and middle school, Tangela had been working at her dream job and was looking forward to the freedom that comes with having older children, when she found out she was pregnant with Caleb. She went into a deep depression and found it very difficult to function. She ended up leaving one of her jobs to help her manage and says that she was eventually able to start feeling better and look forward to meeting her baby.
Breastfeeding is going very well with Caleb and Tangela hopes to nurse him until he's one and then pump until his second birthday. Parenting a new baby and teens is not without it's challenges and it had definitely been a shift for every. Tangela says she still cries some times but they are all smitten with him and he has them wrapped around their fingers.
Tangela has struggled with her own changes in her body. Just a couple weeks ago she talked to her daughters about getting a breast lift after she finishes breastfeeding their brother. She describes the experience as, "they both said; "No, there's nothing wrong with them." I said; "They hang so low". And in true "French Quarters" fashion, I flashed them. We laughed. They insisted that there was nothing. I went onto say; "Y'all right. If I make any adjustments; I'll never know my true beauty."
It was Tangela's dream to capture herself with her baby. To be a part of of this movement and allow the world to see her in her own skin at 41, after having a newborn.
