The stunning Svandis Giolitto and daughter Hekla Sjöfn (9 months). Svandis is originally from Iceland and conceived her daughter there but delivered in the states. It was something they'd looked forward to for a very long time. She'd been off birth control for several years, lost some weight and then learned she conceived. She felt very good through her pregnancy and found her husband to be helpful and supportive in her desire to have a natural birth. She delivered under the care of midwives in hospital. She had went in at 38 weeks for preeclampsia symptoms, they checked her and planned to discharge but her water broke and they ended up admitting her. It was determined that there was a knot in Hekla's cord and it was pulled tight around her neck. It was a very rough birth for her and she eneded up bruised on all of her limbs and after 29 hours in the birth canal had a mishapen head but was born healthy. It took 5 days for Svandis' milk to come in so her daughter lost a lot of weight but they worked through the struggles of breastfeeding initiation and after a tongue tie revision things have gone well. She hopes to reframe the way we look at bodies, particularly postpartum and hopes that women can learn to celbrate that it's differnt for us all.
