The amazing Elizabeth Newsom and Pierce (22 months)
Elizabeth is an OBGYN and was in her 4th year of residency when she realized there wasn't going to be a perfect time to have a baby and be a professional. She was able to conceive Pierce without complication and went on to have a very healthy pregnancy. Elizabeth knew she wanted to have an vaginal delivery if at all hospital. She carried post dates, and labor began smoothly. Pierce had a difficult time through her contractions so she was monitored in hospital and went on to have a vaginal delivery without any complications. Elizabeth remembers laughing while she was pushing realizing how difficult it was, knowing she had told birthing moms that they weren't pushing effectively so many times before.
Elizabeth returned to work to finish her residency when Pierce was just 3.5 weeks old but was able to stay home with him for four months after her graduation. She's so grateful for that time with him and when she returned to work he was just across the street so she could go nurse him on her lunch breaks. While acknowledging that you don't have to have children to be a good OB, Elizabeth says that her experience has definitely allowed her to be more empathetic towards her patients.
As a provider who supports women, positive body image is so important to Elizabeth both for herself and for her patients.
