Shierlyn D. Ochotorena and Florianna, 17 months
When Shierlyn was growing up there was always a lot of pressure to get to a certain point before starting a family. To graduate from college, to get settled into a career. She's been pregnant before but chose to terminate the pregnancies as it just wasn't the right time. She still wasn't certain she wanted to have children when she conceived Florianna but there was just something that told her she had to continue this pregnancy. So she did, and she allowed herself to get swept up into the joy of it all. She felt lucky to not have had any morning sickness and no other symptoms, "other than everyone giving me adoring smiles and seats on the subway".
In the end, however, she says that things became very real. "It was painful and terrifying. A lot of it is all a blur, but after about 18 hours the doctor decided on a cesarean". Florianna screamed so loud when she was earthside that the doctors laughed. When they came home, Shierlyn went through lots of downs, she knew it was going to be hard but didn't feel prepared. "17 months later we are still figuring it out but I'm learning to not but pressure on myself and say it's ok".
"I want Florianna to be in a world where body image is different from today and where being a woman and a mother are celebrated".
