The amazing McKenzie Garcia and son (3). McKenzie was told prior to conceiving her son that she would be unable to get pregnant due to her weight and BMI which was just too high according to her doctors. Her pregnancy was a complete surprise because she believed what they had told her. McKenzie feels she was treated poorly throughout her pregnancy simply because of her weight. She was given many ultrasounds for no real reason other than her weight, she was treated as if she had gestational diabetes when she did not because of her weight, she was given Rhogam twice while pregnant for no real reason. At 38 weeks she went to the hospital because she was having contractions. They told McKenzie her water had broken already and put her on Cervidil and Pitocin. After several hours they requested an internal monitor. They had to break her water in order to place the monitor in her sons head which was upsetting as they'd been telling her it had already broken all along. 12 hours later, after 46 hours of labor with no pain medication, she was told she had to deliver via cesarean. They insisted her son needed antibiotics because her water had been broken for so long, even though it truly had not. When her son was 18 months McKenzie chose to stop vaccinating her son and was subsequently kicked out of her pediatricians practice. At the same time she had begun to worry that he wasn't speaking. Her new doctor referred her to have him evaluated at 2 years but she wasn't ready to listen. She asked for advice from online friends and was told that her son had Autism. She was floored but began to research and realized that everything fit. She immediately started looking for specialists, adjusting his diet and adding supplements. It's been a year and he's come so far, she used to have call him over a dozen times to get his attention but he knows his name now and understands when she talks to him. She has come out to her friends and family as the parent of a child with Autism and hopes to be fully transparent with her families journey in order to help other mothers. McKenzie is an advocate for health at every size, advocating for your experience rather than allowing things to happen for you, and above all sharing your story and supporting one another.
