The radiant Rachel Vanneste with her daughter Genevieve "Ginny" (4) and son Cedric (21 months). Rachel had uncomplicated conceptions and pregnancies physically, however she works as a prenatal genetic counselor and being pregnant while working with woman who had just received troubling and sometimes fatal fetal/pregnancy related diagnosis was difficult to navigate. Knowing all the things that could go wrong also meant that while she was healthy, she was not necessarily carefree. Rachel hired a doula who would support her decision to have an epidural in labor and says that while she knew cascades of intervention could start from there, it wasn't until it happened to her that she believed it. Ginny's birth was not what she'd expected and so she chose to deliver Cedric without any medication and had a much shorter labor without intervention. Breastfeeding is the facet of mothering that Rachel feels the most profound ties. She was able to nurse her daughter for 22 months when she chose to wean in order to conceive and is still nursing Cedric currently with hopes of allowing him to self wean. When her daughter was born Rachel knew she wanted to minimize her exposure to negative body talk and asked the women around her to be mindful when speaking of their bodies and weight. She realized that even the most beautiful and fit women in her life were continually worried about loosing those 5 more pounds and she wants her children's dialogue to be different for at least as long as she can help influence it. Rachel hopes that for herself and for her children celebrate all bodies regardless of their shape or size and simply embrace where they are in that moment.
